Management Traineeship Business & IT

Don’t be surprised by questions like ‘Are you coming to New York with us for the weekend?’

There’s something in the air! When you’re working with people who are the same as you day in, day out, a workday can become a bit boring over time. Obviously, we’re not about to let that happen. Do you have what it takes to show us new things in the field of IT, leadership and process management? Good! Check out our Management Traineeship!

As a Business & IT Trainee, you’ll be working on four different projects over the course of two years. From Passage (Schiphol), to Cargo, and Engineering & Maintenance. Which project will you take on? That’s mostly up to you! From day one you’ll start building your network and meet colleagues who could have an assignment for you. Of course, we’ll keep an eye on you and provide guidance where necessary. All your projects will contribute to the digitalization of KLM. Without forgetting the most important people: our passengers. One way or another, we do it all for them.

Learning by doing. We don’t believe in classrooms and fixed learning paths. With us, you’ll start on a project right away. Together with your team, you can make a difference immediately. That’s what working at KLM IT is all about.

We realize that we’re not the only IT organization offering a traineeship. That’s why we’re happy to help you choose. Does it help you decide if we tell you that our trainees choose their own projects, can always knock on a colleague’s door for advice or guidance, and spend legendary weekends away together? If so, apply quickly and become the new Business & IT Trainee at KLM!

As a trainee, you have the luxury of exploring which work you eventually want to do. Right now I’m working on my second project, which focuses on how we can digitalize aircraft maintenance. The traineeship program is great. By working on four projects, you're introduced to entirely different aspects of the company. Because I’ve worked on KLM-related projects so far, I asked Air France if they had an assignment for me. KLM and Air France are a joint organization when it comes to IT. I think that the best way to find the position that best suits me, is by creating that diversity. The trainees are a close group within KLM. For example, we recently spent a weekend in Lisbon together. That’s the cool thing about this program; we can really rely on each other.

What do trainees talk to each other about? Well, I guess we share what people of our generation share. We watch House of Cards, talk about IT, and are airplane enthusiasts. I'm not an IT professional myself, I have no background in IT, but I do think it's fascinating. IT is everywhere, but in aviation we can implement every technological development straightaway. Even if we don’t roll out everything immediately, we can still do something with it. Instead of just reading about IT, I’m right in the field and working with it. We work in an experimental environment and it’s really great to see the things you’ve built function. You immediately see the tangible result of your work, and you can pick up where you left off the next day.

KLM IT in one word? Diverse. Because KLM is such a comprehensive company (passengers, cargo and aircraft maintenance), the IT needs are very diverse. One department may want an attractive website, while people who work on the platform mostly just want to be able to carry out their work more efficiently. You’re also dealing with many different people who view things in a variety of ways. It’s really cool to get a taste of all these different departments, needs, and insights during a traineeship. My current project focuses on improving the portfolio of our web services. We’re looking at ways to add enhanced services while removing redundant legacy-causing services. As this impacts every department within KLM, I have seen a lot of the company in a very short time.

When you take a moment to think about the products we’ve completed for our customers recently, you realize just how much we’re doing here. We talk a lot, but we do a lot too. I would like to take on the challenge of enabling our applications to be deployed in several places in a single way. At the moment we upload applications to the servers in Amsterdam or Toulouse, but I think it would be cool if we can make sure that it doesn’t matter anymore where the applications are located. That you can just upload an application and it’ll either be in Amsterdam, or France, or the cloud. If we can accomplish that in the next few years then we will have taken a huge step in the field of IT infrastructure.

These days all innovations are IT-driven, and KLM is no exception. You receive your boarding pass through Facebook Messenger, iPads have replaced paper in the cockpit, and the new Dreamliners send all sorts of flight and aircraft data. Apart from being an airline, KLM has become a real IT company. That's why, for instance, my current assignment involves turning KLM Cargo into a data-driven organization. Not basing decisions on human experience but letting the data speak for itself. Consequently, the Business & IT Traineeship offers the perfect opportunity to get to know the different KLM departments and to work with IT and innovation. Aside from that (and perhaps even more importantly), our group of trainees is very close, and we regularly have drinks together or take an international weekend trip together.

During this traineeship, you'll start managing more and more. From day one you have a lot of responsibility and that only increases. Right now I lead a team of seven people in the data center. As the project manager you’re responsible for reaching the goals. To do so, you’re given the freedom to do what you do best. That's cool, but it can also be very challenging. When you're studying, you think you know what it takes to get something to work, but the reality turns out to be much more complex. That was a real eye-opener for me. Fortunately, you learn how to deal with that in the course of your traineeship. No matter who asks the question around here, everyone helps each other.

This is my third assignment and in fact the best one yet. I am Product Owner Track & Trace within the cargo division. When your package is ready for the flight, you receive a message from KLM (push messaging). That process is entirely my responsibility. Cargo is entirely B2B. The great willingness to help each other really stands out within KLM. When people first told me about this, I naturally had to test it out for myself. So I emailed our CTO with a question. And sure enough, within two weeks I could come by for a cup of coffee. You’ll find that willingness to help each other in every rank of the organization. Sometimes you really don't know where to go with a question, but there’s always someone who points you in the right direction. No one is on an island here.
